On the Imperial Production of Nowhere
 America's
most popular "secret base," was founded in 1955
near Groom Lake, Nevada, as a test site for the super-secret
U2 airplane. This non-place is not shown on maps and local commanders
claim federal law does not apply. Until this day the US Air
Force has refused to acknowledge its existence. "Area 51"
is the most popular unofficial name of this site. Less common
names include "Paradise Ranch," "The Box"
and "Dreamland."
Secret landscapes and secret cities like Area 51 are
produced to hide secret weapons and secret airplanes, created
by tens of billions of dollars concealed from congress and the
public. The exact number is, of course, classified, but current
estimates put the figure at around 23 billion dollars for fiscal
year 2003.
Trevor Paglen is an artist and experimental geographer
working out of the Department of Geography at the University
of California, Berkeley. In his project On
the Production of Nowhere, he uses the trope of Area
51 to examine the production of these nowhere-places in relation
to questions of militarism, sovereignty and international law.
He is also organizing tours and expeditions to Area 51 and other
secret bases.
The fragmented images, sounds, histories, and documents
that these restricted landscapes exude are also the source for
a number of other projects and websites. Please follow the links

 If
Trevor Paglen and the below linked webeditors in this way
were disclosing military secrets, their websites would have
been closed down by the government. They do not get imprisoned
like Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli nuclear technician who revealed
the secrets of his country's atomic weapons programme. So what
are they producing? Nothing but myths and unsharp pictures?
Do they actually produce nothing about the imperial production
of nothing?
