'As we know, there are known knowns. There
are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns.
That is to say we know there are some things we do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns, The ones we don't know
we don't know.'
Donald Rumsfeld

What is the status of images?
Paris is invisible
The
desire for a totalizing view of our world is omnipresent,
and reflected in the evolution of diagrams, biological imaging,
and databases. But, according to philosopher, anthropologist
and curator Bruno Latour's Paris:
Invisible City, such attempts at complete cartographic
indexes on the contrary might hinder vision. Paris, for Latour,
is not visualized by static, isolated images, but rather by
the traces of the transitory and interdependent. The city is
tracked through the social and technical networks that give
meaning to spaces, like the tourist map that depends on an infrastructure
of manufactured and maintained architectural signage.
The web-based work Invisible
City combines ethnographic observations, theoretical
discussion and photographs in the form of a 'sociological web
opera' with fifty-three 'plans'. The experience of moving between
the web-opera's plans resembles that of moving through a physical
city. Since there is no point of view making all of Paris visible,
the solution is to move; 'and then, suddenly, Paris gradually
becomes visible'.
Invisible
City raises questions also focused in the exhibition
Iconoclash-
Beyond the Image-Wars in Science, Religion and Art,
which Latour co-curated in 2002. Iconoclash confronts
three types of clashes about the importance, sanctity and power
of representations: in science, in art and in religion. 'Icono-clash'
[not clasm], is when there is a deep and disturbing uncertainty
about the role, power, status, danger, violence of an image
or a given representation; when one does not know whether an
image should be broken or restored; when one no longer knows
if the image-breaker is a courageous innovator or a vandal,
if the image-worshipper is a pious bigot or a respectable devout,
or if the image-maker is a devious faker or a clever fact-maker
and truth-seeker.
'The visible is never in an isolated image or in something
outside of images, but in the montage of images, a transform
of images, a traverse through different views, a progression,
a formatting, a networking.' - Bruno Latour -
