'We join spokes together in a wheel, but
it is the center hole that makes the wagon move. We hammer wood
for a house, but it is the inner space that makes it livable.
We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that
holds whatever we want.'
Lao Tse

The Big Nothing
The Big Nothing
The
Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania
is this summer the anchor of a series of exhibitions and events
investigating nothing. 36 museums, galleries, science centers
and performing arts groups in Philadelphia will address ideas
of nothing, nothingness, and negation in contemporary life.
The main exhibition at ICA, Philadelphia, is organized
around four themes; pop vacuities, metaphysical absences,
negating actions, and the closed or emptied gallery . Among
the more than 50 artists, are works by Andy Warhol and Richard
Prince exploring pop art's portrayal of a vacuous consumer
culture, paintings by Jack Goldstein depicting invisible
natural phenomena like heat or star clusters, photographs
by Louise Lawler of empty or deinstalled museum spaces, and
photographs, manifestos, and other ephemera documenting Yves
Kleins displacing of art from its normative contexts. The
curators are Ingrid Schaffner, Bennett Simpson, Tanya Leighton.
Strike
at Basekamp is a large-scale exhibition of
responses to two questions: How does/could/would the withdrawal
of art affect the world? And does the answer to the first
question reveal ways that art can affect the world or strike
a blow on the structures of the world?
Open
at Arcadia University Art Gallery is an investigation
into the threshold of awareness that emphasizes the process
of looking and curiosity.
Dust
organized by Lighting for Urban Rooftop Environments (LURE)
will manifest itself as an accumulation of media-based projects
presented throughout Philadelphia's urban spaces.
