Camouflage Comics
Comics as Discursive Memorial!
"Camouflage Comics" is a website exploring the history
of the Dirty War, the popular term for the military dictatorship
that governed Argentina between 1976 and 1983, renowned for
"disappearing" tens of thousands of civilians.
The site begins with an encylopaedia entry that outlines
a brief history of the dictatorship, which includes several
strings of blacked-out words. Clicking the censored text reveals
comics produced during this time of political duress and critical
writings about censorship, history, memory and reconstruction.
There is also an accompanying blog, which encourages responses
to the project as well as discussion about censorship.
How
can comics uncover history?
Humour and irony are ways of communicating that becomes more
important during times of censorship and oppression. Camouflaging
here refers to evasive tactics employed to by-pass harsh repression.
Comics then becomes an interesting source for exploring the
past. Also the refreshing dose of individuality found in these
comics add new perspectives to institutional history and thematic
or encyclopaedic sites on the subject.
Camouflage Comics is as a sort of memory-work; a space
for ongoing visual and verbal reflection on the legacies of
the past; "the fragile consensus on the Argentinean military
dictatorship of 1976-1983, the consensus once marked by institutionalized
amnesia".
