'As we know, there are known knowns. There are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns. That is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, The ones we don't know we don't know.'

   The Bomb Project

Devastating Information; The Bomb Project

"Hood" July 5, 1957, Operation Plumbbob, Nevada Test Site, Area 9aWorking as a dense accumulation of linked imagery and documentation, The Bomb Project is an impressive on-line archive of nuclear-related links. In addition to images and information resources, government and non-gevernment sites, it makes accessible declassified files produced by the nuclear industry itself.

It is still appropriate
to consider these doomsday machines. The United States alone maintains a nuclear force of over 10,000 warheads; the world's other nuclear powers may possess as many as 20,000 more, and there is a renewed interest in radioactive weapons like depleted uranium. Further, the atomic aspirations of such states as Iran and North Korea continue to spark international crises, and the possibility that terrorists might obtain and use weapons of mass destruction creates fear.

Roy Lichtenstein, Atom Burst, 1966What propels Nothing. No into The Bomb Project is also the question it raises about possible effects of government secrecy on the perception of past events via new knowledge from declassified imagery. How does a prior state of secrecy affect the impact or meaning of images? Hundreds of thousands of images was generated by weapons effects testing in the 1950s. They were, largely, classified for many decades. Despite government secrecy from the Cold War era through to the present-day, much of this material has been declassified and made available to the general public. According to editor Joy Garnett, the "The Bomb Project" just manages to scratch the surface. How can we then, she asks, effectively challenge government secrecy when we've barely absorbed the information that is available to us?

"Baker" July 24, 1946. Operation Crossroads, Bikini Atoll lagoon, Marshall IslandsJoy Garnett: Our government is as secretive as ever, but more apt to deploy a great array of imagery in the public domain. This seeming over-abundance is itself an act of mediation, but of a subtler order. A good example of this would be the television transmissions from the First Gulf War-the “CNN War”-and the illusion that we were privy to the totality of the war. Only years later were other, less triumphalist and gruesome images declassified for public consumption. Of course, their meaning and impact on the viewing public at the time would have been more significant than it is now.

The Bomb Project, conceived and edited by Joy Garnett, was originally launched Spring 2000.
